This is the title of a little devotional book I was reading last night. It was written by Emilie Barnes. She describes our need to be filled by the Lord everyday. The following is a portion of what I read:
" I find myself holding up a cup that is not quite empty, a heart not quite that humble and hungry. Sometimes my cup holds the old, cold residues of rancid ideas or moldy attitudes or leftover values and stubborn pain. I still need the Lord to fill my cup, but first I need to have it emptied and rinsed clean. That requires both my willingness and the Lord's grace."
I related to this passage. When life never slows down it is hard to empty myself of rancid residue. During the precious moments I do have "quiet time" my mind is a mess. It is hard to focus on anything. I think this is where I go wrong. I am viewing it, more often than not, as something on my to-do list.
The Lord just wants me to be still. Still is not one of my speeds. I don't have a neutral gear. I have several other gears like "because I have to" gear, "get it done" gear," just get outta my way" gear and "superhuman" gear. STILL is not available on this model.
STILL is a speed that is forgotten in this fast pace society. I find it frustrating that even though I know better, I get sucked into being busy. I have experienced the Lord filling my cup. I know He is willing and able. Why then is it so hard for me to STOP and let him.
I think it's a control thing for me. If I am handling things, why do i need to stop. I learned that lesson this week. I need to stop because if I don't I find myself pitifully empty. This is not what the Lord wants for me. Can you image God just waiting to fill me with his Holy Spirit power while watching me crash and burn because I have a control freakish tendency to have to do everything by myself???
I intend to make time for the Lord to fill my cup. I also intend to not be so stubborn in the future.
Here is a little more from the book.
Whatever your circumstances, you, too, can holdup your cup and it be filled. If your cup is polished and dry, hold it out for the Lords plentiful pouring. If your cup is full of old and the unsatisfying, hold it up for the Lord's cleansing. If your cup is cracked and broken, hold it up anyway, for the Lord's resources are plentiful and can keep even leaky cups replenished. Come to him... and then you can say "Surely...my cup runneth over."

Farner's Books
Our family has owned and operated an online bookstore for the past eight years. We sell new and used books, music, and videos. It originally started out as a hobby and has grown into a full time operation. Having books all over the house has been a huge blessing. During our home school years it was a wonderful source of teaching material and kept our costs for curriculum at a minimum. All of our children have benefited from the experience it has provided throughout the years.
We keep an average of 8,000 to 10,000 titles depending on how busy our schedule is at the time. When the kids are in sports or busy with school, etc we do not have as much time to add to our inventory. There is always a constant supply of new titles to add. Everyday there is a plethora of new and inexpensive inventory. We would be honored for you to take a look!

Leave it to PBS to kick start my ponderings. While watching Caillou's imaginings of life as an astronaut, with my littles, a thought hit me. The blessing of gravity. I have often thought not too fondly of gravity while on the scale, but thinking of it in a spiritual sense has enlightened me. Astronauts experience the thrill of weightlessness in space. I always envied the video clips of them floating weightlessly. It looks so fun. But what about when they have to leave the shuttle to make repairs or take samples. Can you imagine how much faith they have to have to leave the safety of the shuttle attached only to a cable. Only a cable to keep them from forever being lost in space.

I think this speaks to where my heart is right now. One particular, really heavy, family circumstance has left me feeling "spaced out." I know there are dark and lonely days that come in this life. I know we are not promised an easy or a fair life. My emotions can quickly take me to a place of hopelessness. Was it all for nothing? Why is this happening? Where are you, God?
Then, in His perfect timing he sends help. Help, in the form of friends, or letters, or even a silly PBS cartoon. He says "I'm here! I will never leave you. I will never forsake you. You are mine. You are tethered to me in perfect love, forever."

What do you do when you are not enough? I have been struggling with this question for a while now. I know there are many times as a mother, wife and just a Christian in general that we are left with questions. I frankly, hate those times. I want to try to do something to make circumstances different. I beat myself up with the thoughts of what I should have done differently. I seem to do everything but rest in what I know. I know God is bigger than every mess that comes my way. Even the latest one. I want to say I am the picture of faith and hope, but I have failed to be that kind of example to those around me.
One of my children is suffering, and it is the hardest thing I have ever gone through. I know it's hardest thing this child has faced as well. The battle is not one I can fight for them though. That' my struggle. I'm having to force myself to let go, and let God take over. I'm a fighter, I love hard, I've never learned the art of letting go. I know my bible, His promises, and what I should do. My mind just doesn't know how to let go.

Now is a time when this child's walk with the Lord has to be their own personal walk, and not one shadowed by my walk. I have to rest in the knowing everything I tried to instill, everything I taught, every hug, every kiss, every heart to heart talk, was not all for not. There are many seeds of truth in that precious heart. I pray for fertile soil and a soften heart in which those seeds will grow.
